What's A Part?

by Julia
(Chicago)

Q: What does the word part mean, (exp)3 parts Gin to 1 part Vermouth?

A: A 'part' when mixing cocktails refers to how much of an ingredient you use in relation to another. Using your example, if the recipe calls for 3oz of Giz and 1oz of vermouth that would be 3 parts to 1.
