Cocktail Party Food Suggestions For Your Next Gathering

What cocktail party food to serve at your next get together is not a question that need haunt you the week before your scheduled soiree. Not all of us are whizzes in the kitchen (I'm raising my hand right now), so coming up with a knock 'em dead menu can seem like a monumental task. Keep it simple, and keep it bite sized and you'll be o.k.

I'm a big fan of the antipasto platter, which is the Italian word for hors d'oeuvre, or "before the meal". Since I am feeling unsophisticated, I would just call it a snack plate. It is perfect cocktail party food that can consist of meats, cheeses, and vegetables in nearly an unlimited variety.

When I was a kid, I would come home, check the refridgerator and announce there was nothing to eat. My mom, in no time flat, would put together one of these plates. Mom's are magic that way.

I suggest making a visit to your local deli to pick up some nice slices of salami, cheeses and crackers. A stash of Mediterranean olives is nice, as is an assortment of pickled or raw vegetables. I also love Prosciutto. It is an Italian cured ham. If you get some of this, try to have it sliced as near to the time of your party as you can. This makes a difference in the consistency. Prosciutto wrapped around bite sized chunks of cantalope is a classic. The salty ham wrapped around the sweet juicy cantalope is to die for.

Caprese salad bites are great to serve as cocktail party food. Get some Roma tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, fresh basil and you have nearly everything you need. Slice the roma tomatoes into cross sections about 1/4 inch thick. Do the same with the Mozzarella. Sprinkle a little salt and pepper on your Roma tomato slices. Lay a fresh basil leaf on top of your Roma slices.Stack the Mozzarella slices on top of the basil. Drizzle a slight amount of quality olive oil over your short stack and you're done. Now just arrange on a nice platter.

A fruit plate is another super simple, delicious item to offer. It is refreshing, and acts as a great palate cleanser. All you have to do is buy whatever fruit is in season: strawberries, cantalope, melon, oranges, etc. Wash and skin your fruit if necessary. Slice it all up into managable bite sizes. Lay your fruit out into an eye pleasing arrangement. Boom, that's it.
